Supervising an A&P Apprentice in California
Your shop can grow its own mechanics. Under 14 CFR 65.77, the supervised hours an apprentice logs under your certificated A&Ps count toward their mechanic certificate — no Part 147 school required. You document the training as it happens; when your apprentice is ready, FAA Form 8610-2 goes to the FSDO serving your area — the local FAA office that verifies their supervised experience and authorizes them to take the mechanic tests. The FAA divides California between 11 FSDOs. Nine counties are split between two or more offices; if you're in one, the service-area map on each office's FAA page shows which office serves your town:

Common Questions
What FAA office do my A&P apprentices report to when turning in their OJT experience documentation?
Nothing is filed until your apprentice is ready to test. Then they bring FAA Form 8610-2 and their documented experience to the FSDO serving the area where they work, which verifies the experience and authorizes the tests. 11 FSDOs serve California: Sacramento (16 counties and part of 3 more), Oakland (9 counties and part of 1 more), Fresno (8 counties and part of 1 more), Reno (6 counties and part of 4 more), San Jose (5 counties and part of 1 more), Van Nuys (2 counties and part of 2 more), San Diego (2 counties), Riverside (1 county and part of 2 more), Las Vegas (part of 2 counties), Los Angeles (part of 2 counties), and Long Beach (part of 2 counties). Nine counties are split between two or more offices; each office's FAA page has a map of its area. Each is listed above with its address and phone.
What does it cost to hire an A&P apprentice in California?
Aircraft mechanics and service technicians in California earn a median of about $86,100 a year (BLS, May 2025). An apprentice isn't certificated yet, so we recommend paying below that, with raises in steps as they progress (for example, as they pass each FAA test) until they earn their A&P.
