14 CFR §65.77 (Experience Requirements)
An applicant must present documentary evidence of 18 months of practical experience for a single rating (Airframe or Powerplant), or 30 months of experience concurrently performing duties appropriate to both ratings for a combined A&P certificate.

Hour Accumulation Calculation (FAA Order 8900.1, ¶5-1134C)
Operational detail for FAA inspectors. If the applicant hasn't met the 30 months concurrently for both ratings, calculate each rating separately using the 18-month requirement. Part-time experience — the 18/30 months is based on a standard 40-hour workweek (8 hours/day, 5 days/week, approximately 160 hours/month). The time is cumulative but the days, weeks, and months don't need to be consecutive.

ACS Experience Coverage: Civil Experience (FAA Order 8900.1, ¶5-1134D(2))
Applicants with civil experience, to include airframe and/or powerplant mechanic's helper experience, and applicants with experience maintaining/building light-sport and/or amateur-built aircraft must have verifiable experience listed in 50 percent of the subject areas of the Aviation Mechanic General, Airframe, and Powerplant Airman Certification Standards (FAA-S-ACS-1) (i.e., the Mechanic Airman Certification Standards (ACS)), as applicable to the rating sought. The timeframe for said experience must add up to 18/30 months for the rating(s) sought.

How to Record Hours

  • Maximum per session: The total hours across all areas cannot exceed 10 per training record.
  • Split hours across areas: If work covered multiple areas, divide the hours among them. Example: oil change → G. Engine Lubrication Systems 2 hrs; repaired landing light → K. Aircraft Electrical Systems 2 hrs.
  • No double-counting: Pick one relevant area per task — do not record the same hours in two places.
  • Subject or element level: You can record at the ACS subject level, or click a subject to expand and record at the ACS element level — your choice.
