Authorization For General Written Knowledge Test: You must ensure that you have the appropriate experience required by 14 CFR § 65.77. If you are at 18 months, contact the FAA FSDO serving you and ask if you can take the General Written Knowledge Test.

Gather your experience documentation (Download from Download Manager):

• Proof of 18 months experience (airframe OR powerplant), OR
• Proof of 30 months experience (for both ratings)
• OJT Tracking, employer letters, pay stubs, etc.

Fill out FAA Form 8610-2. Schedule appointment with your local FSDO. Send your experience documentation. Meet with ASI (Airworthiness Safety Inspector) to review your experience and 8610-2 form. If approved, they'll sign Block V of the form. This signature authorizes you to test. You'll receive TWO signed copies - keep both! Upload copy to My Documents.

Study for the General Written Knowledge Test using our Recommended General Written Study Method. Start studying 4 weeks before your planned test date.

Schedule General Written Knowledge Test using PSI online. Make sure to bring copy of your FAA signed 8610-2 Form. After passing, save your test results - you'll need them for the Oral & Practical exams! Upload copy to My Documents.

Locate the actual DME (Designated Mechanic Examiner) 4-8 weeks before taking your General/Airframe Oral & Practical. Find a DME. It is typically best to take the oral and practical for both General and Airframe in one visit to the DME. Conduct the Pre-Test Interview with the DME (see study guide).

Study for the General/Airframe Oral & Practical using our Recommended General/Airframe Oral & Practical Study Guide.

Ensure you have all required documentation outlined in study guide and go to DME to take General/Airframe Oral & Practical tests. Once you pass you're an FAA Airframe rated mechanic! Congrats! Save your temporary certificates in My Documents.
